2006 saw the opening Ryder Cup style Golf competition between Bangor Young Men and the Bandits from Bryansburn Rangers. Photos of the teams below with a report for your enjoyment. With the Burn 1-0 up in the series the YM will need to be on top of their game this year.

Ryder Cup Style Golf Day Out - Report from  Davey Kerr!!!

After a number of years of friendly rivalry on the football pitch between Bryansburn Rangers and Bangor Young Men the rivalry was taken to a new level last Sunday when the two clubs organised their inaugural golf challenge match at Clandeboye Golf Club. With 10 singles matches and 5 pairs games both sides were looking for the 8 points needed to win the trophy that had been kindly sponsored by The Black Boat bar. First fourball out had the captains, Davey Kerr and Neil Armstrong playing against each other and their partners were Trevor Pinion and Stuart Larmour. To say the fellas were under pressure on the first tee is an understatement having to hit off in front of their teammates. With a lot of friendly banter already starting in the car park and the good weather, the day was set up to be good humoured and competitive. As stated the first match out was between the two captains along with Trevor Pinion and Stuart Larmour. The singles games were tight affairs with no one taking more than a 2-hole lead at any stage. The pairs match though was a different story with the Young men running out comfortable winners by 5 and 3. However the singles were decided on the 18th with Davey Kerr and Trevor Pinion securing 2 points for Bryansburn [B'Burn 2 YM 1]. Next out were Raymond Brown and Sam Brown for Bryansburn taking on Darren Duncan and Davy Waring for the Young Men. Darren put up a great fight to take a half point in his singles against Raymond Brown but with Sam dovetailing very well with Raymond and also winning his point this meant a 2 1/2 to 1/2 point win for Bryansburn [B'Burn 4 1/2 pts YM 1 1/2 pts]. The next group to finish was actually the fourth group out due to some great golf from Mark Riddell and Simon Boyd they whitewashed the Baker brothers, Mike and Robin. This was the only group that had a whitewash so well done to Mark and Simon and as for the Baker brothers there could be a couple of caddie spots filled already for next year [B'Burn 4 1/2 pts YM 4 1/2 pts]. Apparently the last groups out were tight affairs so it was coming down to a nail biting finish. Next result to filter through was from the last fourball were "Big Slipper" Patterson and Graham Lowry were taking on Ken Maginty and Ryan McNarry from the YM. Another tight enough group with Paddy wining his singles but Graham going down to Ryan, however Bryansburn picked up the pairs point as well [B'Burn 6 1/2 pts YM 5 1/2 pts]. Bryansburn were therefore looking for a point and a half from the last fourball to secure the trophy and when word got back that Rab Morrow had beaten Dougie McOwat they were looking for just a half point. Then Robert Morrow [YM] finished off Michael Lemon to leave the scores at B'Burn 7 1/2 pts YM 6 1/2 pts. The pairs match got to the 18th with the YM 1 up so to win the trophy Michael and Rab needed to win the last hole which they did to leave the final score Braynsburn Bandits 8 Bangor YM 7. After the golf the players moved on to the Black Boat were the teams had a meal followed by the Young Men chairman Ken Maginty presenting the trophy to Davey Kerr captain of the Bryansburn Bandits. On a golfing front the YM probably had the best performances of the day from Mark Riddell and Simon Boyd who whitewashed the Baker brothers and also from Robert Morrow who had 43 points on his card. The bandits also had players who played a big part with Sam Brown hitting 5 birdies and Trevor Pinion winning his first ever golf match.
