SENIOR SECTION
SECRETARY’S REPORT 2009-10 SEASON
* Last Season in brackets throughout
1. Players Signed – 110 (119)*
2. Teams
(a) Firsts – 2B Amateur League Manager – Alan Finlay
Played – (24) 26 Won – (11) 8 Drew – (2) 7 Lost – (11) 11 For – (50) 55
Against – (52) 53 Points – (35) 31 Position – (5th) 7th out of 14
Like last year a very poor pre-Christmas run in the league result wise left us languishing near the bottom despite having a very strong team on paper and some good performances. In the New Year the Young Men swept aside most of the oppositions and climbed to a very respectable mid table position. Special mention goes to young star Ross Wilson whose special talent and enthusiasm has been nurtured by Club Manager Alan Finlay to make him along with his team mates a potent menace to the opposition. Consistency next season should see us push for promotion.
(b) Seconds – 3E Manager – TBC
Played – (22) 26 Won – (12) 14 Drew – (3) 3 Lost – (7) 9 For – (81) 59
Against – (50) 37 Points – (39) 45 Position – (5th) 4th out of 14
Again, showing our strength in depth, a very strong second team comfortably this time broke the 40 point barrier and were unlucky to be edged into fourth by just one point. This attractive side needs a full time manager and surely it can go places but nonetheless the several who have taken the helm at various stages in the season including Stevie Ferris, Ben Cooper, Simon Boyd and Neil Armstrong deserve a great deal of credit.
(c) Thirds – Division 1 Down Area Manager – Norman Frazer
Played – (30) 28 Won – (6) 4 Drew – (6) 4 Lost – (18) 20 For – (49) 39
Against – (93) 89 Points – (24) 16 Position – (15th) 14th out of 15
It is great to see the thirds progressing by bringing the youth through. The thirds were highly competitive all season, were not on the end of any notable thrashings unlike some previous years and surely the only way is up for this progressive squad after many long years of trying to get a reasonable foothold in this difficult league.
3. 2009 – 10 Committee
Chairman – Mark Irvine
Treasurer – Colin Gabbey
Secretary – Chris Reilly
Other Members – Andy Strutt, Simon Boyd, Colin Noble, Richard Larmour, Simon Nixon
Thanks goes to the 2009/2010 committee for all the hard work put in. Although all of the above have given freely of their time and effort this year, the introduction of young Andy Strutt has been a revelation and his enthusiasm as a club man stands us in good stead for the coming years.
4. Awards Night
Formal at the Marine Court Hotel. As always an enjoyable and lively occasion. Many thanks to all organisers and in particular Simon Boyd and Andy Strutt. Congratulations to all award winners.
5. Youth
It remains a source of pride to see our Youth wing going from strength to strength and I urge seniors to support the Youth matches, events and wherever else possible as this is the future of the Club. It is great to see them coming through the senior ranks even to the levels of the second and first teams and events such as a the soccer school raises our profile immeasurably. The efforts of the indominitable Cecil Braniff, Taff, Davy Fleming and Aaron Beggs amongst many others are an example to all and they can be assured of every continued support amongst senior ranks.
6. Comments
Membership is very healthy and our teams look and perform well on a Saturday. Good performances at times don’t translate into consistent results and this in my view is what is stopping us achieving long overdue and well deserved promotion from these leagues as well as silverware. The key is training. Club Manager Alan Finlay has been a stalwart of this Club for years, has played football at the highest level and gives of his free time to football almost every day of the week as far as I can guage. He deserves the utmost respect and support from players. It is not always the most appealing thing to do, to appear at a rain soaked and wind swept Ballykillaire or Ward Park in the winter for training but we will be a fitter, more drilled squad able to compete on a level footing with rivals if we show the dedication they do. There are no excuses for half measures. Also, please support our local bar and the Club social events. Camaraderie breeds good team spirit. Club funds have hit some precarious lows in recent seasons and it is only through supporting fund raising events such as barbecues, quiz nights etc that we can keep ourselves on an even keel financially.
Well done for all your superb effort during 2009-2010. Enjoy your rest. Let’s onwards to promotion and silverware for the mighty BYM into 2010-2011.
